Geothermal activity seen from the lake

Our travel group at Waimangu, outside Rotorua

We spent two busy days in and around Rotorua, an unusual city of 57,000 on the North Island. The city is surrounded by geothermal activity, with hot springs in abundance.

We drove to nearby Waimangu, where there was a major volcanic eruption in 1886 and a powerful geyser eruption in 1903 that killed four people. A boat ride allowed us to see more evidence of geothermal energy. Nearby we also saw hot mud bubbling out of the ground.
