We drove several hours from our hotel near Queenstown to the west coast of the South Island to get to Milford Sound. Along the way we followed the edge of Lake Wakatipu and Lake Te Anau, through Fiordland National Park, and were treated to lovely scenery on yet another picture-perfect day.

When we arrived at Milford, we boarded an excursion boat to sail out through Milford Sound and back. The larger body of water beyond where we turned around is the Tasman Sea. Milford Sound is not really a sound by the official definition, because it was formed by glaciers. By any other name, it is still beautiful. This scenery is one of the big reasons I wanted to come to New Zealand, and I have not been disappointed!
On the way we saw interesting rock formations, waterfalls, amazing views, and seals sunning themselves on the rocks. But the highlight of the cruise for me was seeing a Fiordland penguin sitting on the rocks, a rather rare sighting according to the captain.
