Glow little Glow Worm

The pictures don't do it justice, unfortunately!  We took a nighttime walk in the woods to see glow worms indigenous to New Zealand. They are really carnivorous larvae from a fly that emits a luminous glow to attract food. The brighter the glow, the more likely they are to attract tiny insects to their sticky threads.

The best way to describe them is like a lightning bug that doesn't blink, but one can only see them in the dark. Like seeing fairies in the woods. Fascinating!
Close-up of the slender filaments with tiny orbs that attract even smaller insects
Shining a flashlight ("torch") on the glow worm takes away from the effect, sad to say
