Back from a school for special needs kids

Hi, there! Today was the best day yet for volunteering. We went to a school for children with Down Syndrome and other developmental disabilities. It turned out to be the best of the four days of volunteering so far for those of us giving out eye glasses. The general medicine volunteers have had good results each day, I believe.

This is the last day that we have with the Ophthalmologist, Dr B. He and his whole family volunteered this week, at the instigation of his 15 year old daughter who has studied Spanish in school and wants to be a doctor. Dr B's wife and 12 year old son also volunteered, and all are reasonably conversant in Spanish. They were all wonderful volunteers, and we will miss them on the last day of clinic tomorrow.

After the clinic, we walked downtown to find an ATM and took a taxi back to the hotel. The taxi is a three-wheeled tuk-tuk. Very fun!

Yesterday and today have both been warm in the middle of the afternoon (perhaps mid-70's), the difference being that yesterday the bus took us pretty high in the mountains and today we stayed at 9,000 feet or so. I am really enjoying the bright sunlight and warm days. Of course once the sun goes down, it gets really chilly.

Speaking of chilly, none of the rooms in the hotel are heated. The beds all have multiple layers of blankets, which means that once I get past the initial shock of climbing into a cold bed and start warming up, the rest of the night is toasty warm. Getting out of bed in the morning is another thing altogether.

Here are some more pictures from the Lamay Clinic Project, including giving out vitamins and checking shoe sizes, Bill and Maureen with three of the children, and a group photo. You can click on any photo to see it in a larger size.
